Introduction: The Land Where Kenya's Finest Honey is Born

Nestled in the heart of Kenya, Tharaka-Nithi and Meru counties are home to some of the most biodiverse forests in East Africa. The Nyambene Hills, the slopes of Mount Kenya, and the vast Tharaka lowlands create a unique ecosystem where hundreds of flowering plant species bloom throughout the year — providing bees with an extraordinary variety of nectar sources.

It is from this remarkable landscape that Tharaka Nectars sources its premium honey Kenya. Our honey is not just a product — it is a story of land, community, tradition, and nature working in perfect harmony. In this article, we take you behind the scenes to show you exactly how our raw honey Kenya is harvested, from the hive to your jar.

Why Tharaka-Nithi and Meru Produce Kenya's Best Honey

The quality of honey is directly determined by the environment where bees forage. Here is why Tharaka-Nithi and Meru produce some of the finest natural honey Kenya has to offer:

  • 🌿 Exceptional floral diversity – Hundreds of indigenous flowering trees, shrubs, and wildflowers provide bees with a rich, varied nectar diet that creates complex, flavourful honey
  • 🌿 Chemical-free environment – The forests of Tharaka-Nithi are largely free from pesticides and industrial chemicals, producing truly organic honey Kenya
  • 🌿 Year-round flowering – The region's varied altitude and climate zones mean something is always in bloom, supporting healthy, productive bee colonies throughout the year
  • 🌿 Clean water sources – Rivers and streams from Mount Kenya provide bees with clean water, essential for healthy colony development
  • 🌿 Traditional beekeeping heritage – Communities in Tharaka and Meru have kept bees for generations, passing down knowledge and practices that respect both bees and the environment

Traditional Beekeeping in Tharaka and Meru

Beekeeping in Tharaka and Meru has deep cultural roots. For centuries, local communities have harvested honey using traditional log hives — hollowed-out tree trunks hung high in the forest canopy. This practice, known locally as uki (honey) harvesting, is still practised alongside modern methods today.

Traditional Log Hives

Traditional log hives are made from hollowed sections of hardwood trees. They are sealed at both ends with bark or clay, with small entrance holes for bees. These hives are hung in trees at heights of 3–10 metres to protect them from predators like honey badgers and to position them close to foraging areas.

Harvesting from traditional hives is typically done at night or in the early morning when bees are less active. Beekeepers use smoke from burning dry grass or leaves to calm the bees before opening the hive and removing honeycomb by hand.

The Role of Smoke

Smoke is the beekeeper's most important tool. When bees detect smoke, they instinctively begin consuming honey in preparation for what they perceive as a forest fire. This makes them calmer and less likely to sting. Traditional Tharaka and Meru beekeepers are experts at using just the right amount of smoke — enough to calm the bees without overheating the hive.

Modern Beekeeping Practices at Tharaka Nectars

At Tharaka Nectars, we combine the wisdom of traditional beekeeping with modern, sustainable practices to produce pure honey Kenya of the highest quality.

Kenya Top Bar Hives (KTBHs)

We use Kenya Top Bar Hives — a design developed specifically for African conditions. These hives are more accessible than traditional log hives, allowing beekeepers to inspect colonies regularly, monitor bee health, and harvest honey more efficiently without disturbing the entire colony.

Langstroth Hives

For higher-volume production, we also use Langstroth hives — the internationally recognised standard for commercial beekeeping. These hives use removable frames that allow for easy honey extraction without destroying the comb, which bees can then reuse.

Protective Equipment

Our beekeepers wear full protective suits, gloves, and veiled hats during harvesting. This protects both the beekeeper and the bees — a calm, unhurried harvest causes less stress to the colony and results in better quality honey.

The Honey Harvesting Process: Step by Step

Step 1: Choosing the Right Time to Harvest

Honey is harvested when the honeycomb is at least 80% capped — meaning bees have sealed the cells with beeswax, indicating the honey has reached the correct moisture content (below 20%). Harvesting too early results in honey with high moisture content that can ferment.

Step 2: Smoking the Hive

The beekeeper lights a smoker using dry grass, leaves, or wood chips. Smoke is gently puffed into the hive entrance and under the lid to calm the bees before opening.

Step 3: Inspecting and Selecting Frames

The beekeeper carefully removes frames or top bars and inspects them. Only fully capped frames are selected for harvesting. Frames with brood (bee larvae) are always left in the hive.

Step 4: Removing Bees from the Frames

Bees are gently brushed off the selected frames using a soft bee brush. This is done carefully to avoid harming the bees.

Step 5: Uncapping the Honeycomb

The beeswax caps are removed from the honeycomb cells using an uncapping knife or fork. This exposes the honey inside the cells.

Step 6: Extracting the Honey

Uncapped frames are placed in a honey extractor — a centrifuge that spins the frames, using centrifugal force to pull honey out of the cells without destroying the comb. The empty comb is returned to the hive for bees to refill.

Step 7: Straining (Not Filtering)

The extracted honey is passed through a coarse strainer to remove large pieces of wax and debris. Tharaka Nectars does not fine-filter our honey — fine filtering removes beneficial pollen, propolis, and other natural compounds. Our honey retains all its natural goodness.

Step 8: Settling and Jarring

The strained honey is left to settle in food-grade containers for 24–48 hours, allowing air bubbles to rise to the surface. It is then carefully poured into clean glass or food-grade plastic jars and sealed.

Step 9: Labelling and Quality Check

Every batch of Tharaka honey is checked for moisture content, colour, aroma, and taste before labelling. Only honey that meets our quality standards is packaged and sold.

Case Study: A Tharaka-Nithi Beekeeper's Journey with Tharaka Nectars

Name: Mwangi J., 52, Beekeeper, Tharaka-Nithi County
Experience: 20 years of traditional beekeeping
Partnership with Tharaka Nectars: 4 years

Mwangi inherited his beekeeping knowledge from his father, who kept traditional log hives in the forests of Tharaka. For years, he sold honey informally at local markets, often receiving low prices and struggling to find consistent buyers.

When he partnered with Tharaka Nectars, everything changed. He received training in modern hive management, quality harvesting techniques, and proper honey handling. Tharaka Nectars provided him with Kenya Top Bar Hives and protective equipment, and guaranteed to purchase all his quality honey at fair prices.

Results after 4 years:

  • āœ” Honey production increased from 30kg to 180kg per season
  • āœ” Income from beekeeping tripled
  • āœ” Trained 8 other community members in modern beekeeping
  • āœ” His children are now in secondary school, funded by honey income

"Tharaka Nectars changed my life. I have been keeping bees all my life, but now I have the knowledge, equipment, and market to do it properly. My honey is now sold across Kenya and I am proud that people everywhere are enjoying what we produce here in Tharaka." — Mwangi J., Tharaka-Nithi County

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Where exactly is Tharaka Nectars honey harvested?

Our honey is harvested from beehives located in and around the forests of Tharaka-Nithi County, including the Nyambene Hills and the Tharaka lowlands. Some honey also comes from partner beekeepers in neighbouring Meru County.

2. Is Tharaka Nectars honey truly organic?

Our honey is harvested from bees that forage in chemical-free forests, far from pesticide use. We do not use any chemicals in or around our hives. While we are working towards formal organic certification, our practices fully meet organic standards.

3. How do you ensure the honey is pure and not adulterated?

Every batch is tested for moisture content and quality before packaging. We never add sugar syrups, water, or any other substance to our honey. Our transparent sourcing and direct relationships with beekeepers ensure full traceability.

4. Does harvesting honey harm the bees?

Not when done responsibly. We always leave sufficient honey in the hive for the bees to feed on. Our careful, smoke-assisted harvesting process causes minimal stress to the colony. Healthy bees are essential to our business, so their welfare is our priority.

5. Why does Tharaka Nectars honey taste different from supermarket honey?

Our honey is raw and unprocessed, retaining all its natural flavour compounds from the diverse flora of Tharaka-Nithi. Supermarket honey is typically heated, filtered, and often blended from multiple sources, which removes much of its natural flavour and character.

6. What types of flowers do the bees in Tharaka forage on?

Our bees forage on hundreds of indigenous plant species including wild fig, acacia, croton, wild sage, leleshwa, and many other forest flowers. This floral diversity gives Tharaka honey its unique, complex flavour profile.

7. How many beekeepers does Tharaka Nectars work with?

We work with a growing network of community beekeepers across Tharaka-Nithi and Meru counties. Supporting local beekeepers and their families is central to our mission.

8. Is the honey harvested year-round?

Yes. The diverse altitude and climate zones of Tharaka-Nithi mean that different plant species flower at different times of year, providing bees with nectar sources throughout the year. Main harvesting seasons typically align with the long and short rains.

9. Can I visit the beekeeping sites in Tharaka?

We occasionally organise farm visits and educational tours for interested customers and groups. Contact us at inquiries@tharakanectars.co.ke or WhatsApp 0762 769 859 to enquire about visits.
